50's Fashion Photography

I love vintage fashion, so I am always excited when I get to work on a project that is vintage inspired.  The photographer came to me with this awesome 50s hat and the rest of the outfit proceeded from there.

50's Fashion in Film

50's fashion in film is my focus for this week.  I'm doing some research for a film expo fashion show I'm styling in September.  Some of the films I will mention here and in later posts I have not seen, but the clothes are iconic for the period.  Please comment with some of your favorite movies for fashion from the 50's.

50's Fashion Inspiration - Capri Pants

Among my favorite 50's fashion looks for summer are capri pants, also known as cropped pants.  Here are some inspiration photos.

To make them work for your body type, consider these tips.  Avoid capri's that hit at the largest part of the calf, especially if you are petite.  They should end at the smaller part of the leg. The most flattering capri's on everyone are those with a straight, slim (but not tight) leg.  If you have ample hips and a smaller bust, wear them with a loose top and choose ones in a solid, darker color.  Ballet flats or sandals are the perfect compliment, depending on the look you want.  The more dramatic personality may wear them with heels.

50's Swimsuits - The Iconic One Piece

Who says you can't look fabulous in a one piece swimsuit?  Esther Williams was an American competitive swimmer and movie star of the 1940's and 50's.  She really rocked a one piece swimsuit!  Check out these photos of Esther and also some modern retro swimsuits you can rock.

Below are some modern versions of 50's swimsuits.  These styles look particularly stunning on curvy figures and many come in plus sizes.

50's 60's Fashion Photographer - John French

John French (1907-1966) was one of London's top fashion photographers of the 1950's and 60's.  These photos are great inspiration for a shoot I have coming up.  Hope you enjoy them.

Historically Inspired Fashion from Grace Coddington of Vogue

Grace Coddington (1941-) is a former model and the Creative Director of American Vogue Magazine.  I love some of the historically inspired fashion shoots she has styled.  Here are a few examples, plus some historic photos of her as a model.
